ROLANDAS PAKSAS
Born in 1956, June 10th, in town of Telsiai. His parents Feliksas and
Elena Paksai still live in this town. Rolandas is their singleton. In
1974 he graduated from Zemaites secondary school in Telsiai and then
left for Vilnius. In 1979 graduated from Vilnius Civil Engineering
Institute (now - Vilnius Gediminas Technical University) receiving a
degree of Industrial and Civil Constructions engineer. In 1984
graduated from Leningrad (now - Sankt Petersburg) Civil Aviation
Academy receiving a degree of engineer pilot.
R.Paksas became a professional sportsman. A member of former
Soviet Union acrobatic flying team, Lithuanian high pilotage team.
Multifold champion of acrobatic flying in Lithuania, winner of
international aeroplane sport competitions.
While being a sportsman R.Paksas worked as pilot trainer. Later he
became Director of S.Darius and S.Girenas aeroclub in Vilnius,
commander of Voluntary National D Service. 1992-1997 was a president
of construction joint-stock company "Restako".
In 1997 R.Paksas was elected to Vilnius City Council and in 1999
became a Mayor of the city of Vilnius. Later this year he became Prime
Minister of the Republic of Lithuania in the Ninth Cabinet. After
resignation he worked as the Adviser to President of the Republic of
Lithuania, Authorized Representative for Special Assignments. He was
elected the chairman of Lithuanian Liberal union. From October 1999
until September 2002 president of Vilnius Club, one of the founders of
Vilnius Club. In 2000 R.Paksas became a Mayor of the city of
Vilnius. Soon he was elected to the Parliament of the Republic of
Lithuania. From November 2000 until June 2001 he was Prime Minister in
the Eleventh Cabinet. Later he became a leader of opposition in
Parliament. In March 2002 he was chairman of the newly-founded
Liberal Democrats party. From September 2002 honorary president of the
Vilnius Club. Member of Acrobatic Flying Federation of Lithuania.
Married to Laima Paksiene, engineer economist. Two children, daughter
Inga and son Mindaugas.
In January 5, 2003 Rolandas Paksas was elected President Of the
Republic of Lithuania.
April 6, 2004 Lithuania's parliament sacked Paksas for his
links to a Russian businessman who funded his election campaign, making
Paksas the first European leader to be removed through impeachment.
